NAZARETH, Pa.- The Moravian Historical Society announced they will launch a preservation project to preserve the 1740 Gray Cottage in Nazareth, the oldest existing Moravian log house in North America.
The preservation project is expected to begin Aug. 11 and will consist of repairs to meet current preservation standards, the society said in a news release.
Officials said visitors are welcome to watch the house’s restoration between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. from Tuesdays to Fridays.
Frank Stroik, a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission contractor who specializes in eighteenth-century log home restoration, will lead the project, according to the report.
The cottage was first built in November 1740 and played a role in the creation of the first school in Nazareth, according to the release.
The Moravian Historical Society said Gray Cottage was involved in the American Revolution and other historic conflicts and now currently stands as an educational resource for visitors.
“This preservation project is an investment in Nazareth’s earliest surviving building and in the stories it continues to tell,” Susan Ellis, executive director of The Moravian Historical Society, said.
“By preserving the Gray Cottage today, we are ensuring that future generations can experience an authentic connection to the earliest days of Nazareth, the Moravian settlement, and colonial America.”
