The Mercy Center for Women is making progress on its efforts to transform the old Sacred Heart School building into a housing complex.
According to Mercy Center for Women Executive Director Jennie Hagerty, they have officially wrapped up phase one of the $7 million project, after replacing the building’s roof.
Construction crews are now renovating all of the rooms to transform them into 20 apartments.
Once project is completed, the 42,000 square foot building will help house 40 individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis.
There will also be a food pantry and other wrap-around services to help families get back on their feet.
“The need has increased over the years,” said Hagerty. “We are increasing in poverty in our community and so to have this building and to have a place to call home, in a few short years will bless Erie.”
On Tuesday, the Mercy Center for Women is one of nearly 500 non-profit organizations participating in this year’s Erie Gives Day.
All of the money raised at this year’s event will go towards this project, which is expected to wrap up by June of 2028.
