As Erie native Nick Pallotto continues his push for answers about the status of the South Erie Post Office, his petition calling for the facility to reopen has collected nearly 800 signatures, including one from Rep. Mike Kelly.
Kelly met with Pallotto Wednesday morning, giving him an opportunity to present the petition and share information he has gathered about when or whether the post office will reopen.
Pallotto was joined by Erie City Council Vice President Kathy Schaaf and Werner Books owner Kyle Churman, who expressed their support for his efforts.
Pallotto said he has been frustrated by the lack of information surrounding the post office’s status. After hearing his concerns, Kelly said he is determined to help get answers.
“Nick and all those people who signed the petition deserve answers,” Kelly said.
“These are the things that really frustrate and drive the American people to say nobody is effective or efficient anymore. This is just not acceptable.”
Pallotto said he left the meeting feeling optimistic about having Kelly’s help and hopes the post office will reopen before the holiday season.
“To go through Christmas again, like we did last year, with only three branches when we could have four, I believe he heard that, and we will see what he comes up with,” Pallotto said.
Pallotto also told Kelly that one of the major concerns among petition signers is bringing mail-sorting machines back to Erie. Pallotto said some Erie-area mail is currently transported to Pittsburgh for processing before being sent back to Erie for delivery.
