Several Special Olympics athletes teamed up with Erie Insurance employees Thursday for an afternoon of bocce, friendship and community engagement at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Complex at the Millcreek Mall.
The two-hour event paired Special Olympics athletes with Erie Insurance volunteers, giving employees the opportunity to learn the game directly from experienced competitors while enjoying some friendly competition.
While bocce was at the center of the day’s activities, organizers said the event was about much more than keeping score. The gathering provided an opportunity for athletes and volunteers to build meaningful connections, share experiences and foster a sense of inclusion.
Athletes helped teach the rules and strategies of the sport to Erie Insurance employees, creating an environment where teamwork and collaboration were on full display.
Organizers said partnerships like these are valuable because they bring people together through shared experiences while promoting acceptance, understanding and community involvement. The event also allowed Erie Insurance employees to support local Special Olympics programs and engage directly with athletes.
Throughout the afternoon, participants cheered one another on, celebrated successful throws and enjoyed the chance to connect outside of their everyday routines.
By the end of the event, organizers said the bocce competition had accomplished its larger goal: strengthening relationships, encouraging inclusion and demonstrating the positive impact that community partnerships can have on athletes and volunteers alike.
