‘Pretty lucky to be alive’: Pittsburgh crews rescue man stuck for hours after falling down elevator shaft
A man who fell multiple stories down an elevator shaft in Pittsburgh was rescued after being stuck for six hours.
“He’s pretty lucky to be alive,” Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS District Chief Mike Rogers said.
Officials say they responded to a 911 call to an abandoned building on River Avenue Thursday afternoon.
When they arrived, Rogers said no one was there to meet them. Rescue crews then had to find the man after making entry through the front.
“He was in shaft number two. It appears at the bottom with an elevator car above him,” Rogers said.
The man told first responders he fell about six stories.
Officials said they had trouble getting access to the man but were eventually able to get him out and into an ambulance.
According to officials, the man sustained injuries to both of his legs and had multiple other aches and pains.
Rogers told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 the man may have been with other people but those people took off before responders arrived.
