Historians, authors, and history enthusiasts gathered at Gannon University on Thursday as a two-day symposium honoring Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry and the War of 1812 got underway in the university’s Yehl Ballroom.
The event shines a spotlight on Perry’s enduring legacy and Erie’s pivotal role in one of the nation’s most significant naval victories. Attendees will hear from nationally recognized historians and authors who will offer insights into the War of 1812, Perry’s leadership, and the lasting impact of the Battle of Lake Erie.
Adding a personal connection to the program, one of Perry’s descendants is also scheduled to participate, sharing perspectives on the famed naval commander’s life and legacy.
The symposium is part of ongoing efforts to celebrate and preserve Erie’s rich maritime history, which is closely tied to Perry’s victory over the British fleet on Lake Erie in 1813.
Alongside the educational sessions, the Hagen History Center is preparing to unveil a new permanent exhibit dedicated to the naval hero. The exhibit, titled “Command & Courage: Oliver Hazard Perry,” will explore Perry’s leadership, military accomplishments, and connection to Erie.
Museum officials say the exhibit is expected to open later this summer and will provide visitors with an in-depth look at the man who became one of the most celebrated figures in American naval history.
Organizers hope the symposium and upcoming exhibit will inspire both residents and visitors to learn more about Perry’s contributions and the important role Erie played in shaping the nation’s history.
