SALISBURY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police are urging drivers and riders to be cautious after two separate crashes.

“The incidents involved two juveniles under the age of 18 that were operating electric scooters and or bicycles on our township streets,” said Sergeant Bryan Losagio with the Salisbury Township Police Department.

He says, in both cases, the cars and the juveniles collided, leaving the riders with injuries.

“What happened was they just didn’t stop for stop signs. One of the juveniles was almost run over, fortunately she escaped something really bad happening,” said Losagio. “The second one was hit pretty hard and ended up landing on the windshield of the motor vehicle.”

Following these crashes, police want to remind riders of the law.

“With the e-scooter, there is no age restriction, but those cannot be on the road,” Losagio explained. “E-scooters are for private property only, so if you see somebody on an e-scooter, they really should not be on the road.”

“You also have the e-bicycles,” he continued. “Now those you have to be 16 years of age or older to ride.”

E-bikes also need to have lights on them, and riders must follow the rules of the road.

As e-bikes and scooters become more common, so do tragedies. That’s why police are sending a strong message.

“It’s not if, it’s when our township’s gonna experience something horrible,” Losagio said. “A lot of communities have gone through this, and these types of vehicles are causing crashes and deaths, so just be careful with where you ride them and stay off the street on the e-scooters.”
