LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Lexington Fayette Urban County Council passed the first reading of an ordinance designed to stop people from blocking bike lanes on Thursday.
The ordinance would stop people from stopping, standing or parking in a designated bike lane.
Anyone caught blocking a lane would face a $50 to $100 fine.
There are some exceptions allowed in the ordinance:
Rideshare/taxi and delivery drivers are allowed to stop in bike lanes for up to ten minutes for active pick-ups, drop-offs or loading;Public transit (at designated stops) and emergency vehicles are fully exempt.
Enforcement of the ordinance would be handled by LexPark downtown and by the Lexington Police Department elsewhere, following a 30-45-day public education period.
The ordinance requires a second reading to become law.
Employee sick leave bank
The council also voted to move forward with a city employee sick leave bank program.
It would allow city employees to donate their unused sick leave hours to others who may be facing major medical events.
Employees would only be able to borrow other people’s time if they use all of their own sick leave hours.
The ordinance received its first reading on Thursday and will require another to become law.
