Pennsylvania schools to receive funding for free menstrual products
SCRANTON, Pa. —
Pennsylvania schools will receive $3 million in state funding this year to provide free menstrual hygiene products, with a total of $9 million allocated over the next three years.
Addressing period poverty in schools
During a visit to West Scranton High School, education leaders discussed the issue of “period poverty,” where students lack access to necessary hygiene products. They explained that this can lead to missed classes, anxiety, embarrassment, and the use of unsafe alternatives.
“Menstrual hygiene products are not a luxury. They are a basic health necessity,” education leaders said.
“We’re removing a barrier that never should have existed in the first place. Period products are school supplies. Period,” Dr. Debra Bogen, secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Health, said.
Funding support for students
“Every young woman in our schools, I want you to know this: We see you. We support you, and we will continue to work to ensure that nothing stands in the way of your education and your success,” Dr. Erin Keating, superintendent of the Scranton School District, said.
Schools will be funded at a rate of $1.81 per student to support this initiative.
