The BBC has revealed a sneak peek at the upcoming series, which returns this autumn and will once again bring viewers back to the criminal underworld of Liverpool.

Filming for the new episodes also took place in Spain.

The story picks up immediately after the season one finale, with Michael Kavanagh and Diana Williams drawn back into the chaos to answer for the death of Ricardo Guzman.

BAFTA-nominated actor James Nelson-Joyce returns as Michael alongside Hannah Onslow as Diana, Michael’s partner.

Back in Liverpool, tensions continue to rise amongst the remaining gang members and an old school gangster from Ronnie’s era, recently out of prison, wants compensation from the firm. 

There will be a host of returning cast members, including Jack McMullen as Jamie Phelan, Mike Noble as Banksey, and Julie Graham as Elaine Phelan and widow of murdered gang leader Ronnie (Sean Bean).

New faces in the cast include Shaun Evans as recently released gangster Ozzie Thompson, and Álvaro Morte as Felipe Guzman, a member of the Colombian cartel and the late Ricardo’s younger brother.

Laura Aikman as Rachel Duffy, Kevin Harvey as Bobby Duffy, Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Cheryl Crawford, Darci Shaw as Melissa Sullivan, Adam Abbou as Freddie, and Bobby Schofield as Bonehead will also grace viewers’ screens in the second series.

The drama was created and written by Stephen Butchard and produced by Left Bank Pictures.

The first season proved a major hit, with three million viewers streaming the finale ahead of its BBC One broadcast in May.

It also earned BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Drama and Leading Actor for James Nelson-Joyce.

Fans have expressed particular excitement about the return of Nelson-Joyce in season two.
