SCRANTON, Pa. (WBNG) — Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen visited West Scranton High School on Thursday, Aug. 13, to highlight the state’s ongoing program providing free menstrual products in schools.
National studies from Period.org show that roughly one in four girls struggle to afford period products, with 23% missing school due to a lack of access.
“Not having access to period products should never lead to a missed day of school,” Bogen said. “When a student is forced to stay home because she lacks basic health essentials, it doesn’t just derail one lesson—it creates a ripple effect that impacts her grades, graduation and future.”
The initiative recently secured $3 million in the 2026-27 state budget, bringing Governor Shapiro’s total investment to $9 million over three consecutive budgets.
This state-funded effort aims to remove financial barriers to learning and help female students focus on their studies.
More than 750 Pennsylvania school districts, career centers and charter schools participate in the program.
In northeastern Pennsylvania, local schools will receive over $412,000, with the Scranton School District receiving nearly $17,000 to assist its student body.
“By making free period products available to more than 650,000 girls across Pennsylvania, we are removing a silent barrier to education and ensuring every student can stay in class and focus on learning,” Bogen said.
