Erie County leaders say a major update to the city’s Opportunity Zones program could help attract new investment to neighborhoods across the region.
Officials unveiled what they are calling “Opportunity Zones 2.0” on the steps of the Erie County Courthouse on Friday afternoon.
The updated framework builds on the existing Opportunity Zones program while emphasizing greater transparency, long-term stability, and easier navigation for communities and investors.
“This is an investment opportunity throughout the United States to take a look at Erie and invest in different projects that we have put together, so it’s very easy for the governor to designate these zones,” Erie County Executive Christina Vogel said.
Real estate development is one of the initiative’s top priorities, particularly in rural areas where investors see opportunities for growth and untapped potential.
County leaders say the changes are intended to help move stalled projects forward while giving municipalities more control over how redevelopment takes shape. That includes housing projects, commercial development, and long-term business investment.
“Officials say the updates are designed to make redevelopment efforts more transparent and community-focused, and they plan to closely monitor projects as they move forward.” Stephanie Logue shared.
“We recently learned that there was more than $400 million in Opportunity Zone investment in our downtown, a significant investment in the city,” said Tim Wachter, an attorney and Opportunity Zone expert. “The size of it has made great strides toward our redevelopment. Now, in Opportunity Zone 2.0, we have the opportunity to expand.”
“Get outside investment to take advantage of Opportunity Zone 2.0, but also we’re trying to layer on multiple opportunities so that Erie County is not something you can ignore,” Vogel said.
County officials say they hope the updated program will attract new investment, support redevelopment projects, and create additional economic opportunities throughout Erie County.
