14 displaced after fire in Scranton apartment building

A small fire in a Scranton senior apartment building left more than a dozen people displaced.

Responding firefighters found the fire in an eighth-floor apartment in Amos Towers was mostly put out by the sprinkler system, Fire Chief John Judge said. It was called in at 5 p.m. Friday.

The building at 525 Jefferson Ave. was evacuated, but 14 residents were unable to return to their apartments because of the water damage. Judge said six people were put up in hotels by the American Red Cross, one person was assisted by Telespond Senior Services and seven people stayed with family members.

The fire was contained to the apartment, he said, but most of the building sustained water damage. There were no injuries.
