‘Sam would be proud’: 18 years later, Reading community still runs for Samuel Reed | Reading Area

READING, Pa. – Runners and walkers hit the trails for another year in Berks County earlier this morning.

It was all for the 18th annual Run4Sam race that honors the life of Samuel Reed.

Sam was a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh when he was tragically killed by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run accident.

A former cross-country runner at Schuylkill Valley High School, running was one of Sam’s passions.

The run is held at Grings Mill Park because it was his favorite place to run and clear his mind.

“Every step that everybody takes, whether they’re a runner or walker or spectator helps to give back to the community. It’s become really important for us to support local charities too… Sam would be proud,” says Peggy Reed, president of Run4Sam Inc.

Proceeds from the race are given back to the community, including a scholarship each year.

Donations also go back to the park and several local charities.
