BUTLER TWP., LUZERNE CO. — An Allentown man whose driver’s license has been suspended for more than two decades is facing charges following a traffic stop in Luzerne County, according to Butler Township Police.
Police said officers were conducting an aggressive driving enforcement detail along the 100 block of South Hunter Highway around 4 p.m. Aug. 6 when an officer spotted a vehicle traveling 68 mph in a posted 40 mph zone.
Officers stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as 64-year-old John Garland Eden, of Allentown.
According to a criminal complaint, Eden told the officer his driver’s license had been suspended following a previous DUI conviction.
Police said a review of Eden’s driving record showed his operating privileges have been suspended since 2005. Court records also showed Eden had four previous convictions for driving while under a DUI-related suspension.
Eden was charged with being a habitual offender and driving under DUI suspension, both misdemeanor offenses. He also faces several summary traffic violations.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next month in Magisterial District Court.
The traffic stop was conducted as part of Pennsylvania’s Aggressive Driver Enforcement program, which uses federal funding administered through PennDOT to support targeted enforcement aimed at reducing aggressive-driving crashes, injuries and deaths.
