The Erie County Haz-Mat Team responded early Tuesday morning to a corrosive chemical leak in Edinboro.

According to Erie County Emergency Management Coordinator Brian Mesaros, crews were dispatched to the 1000 block of Marketplace Drive, just off of the I-79 Edinboro exit.

Calls initially were for a tanker truck leaking gasoline in the parking lot of Comfort Suites, but they quickly came to learn that it wasn’t fuel that the tanker was carrying, but a caustic waste product.

Mesaros said a valve at the back of the tanker was the cause of the leak. Only about two to three gallons spilled onto the pavement.

The Edinboro Fire Department put up a pool to catch any remaining leaks while they remediated the area, putting an absorbent material on what was left.

The company who owns the tanker is working with Erie Haz-Mat.
