HELLERTOWN, Pa. — Police officers in Hellertown came face to face with some furry friends while on the job this week.

It isn’t the mainland of Australia or the island state of Tasmania, rather, the lush greenery of Hellertown’s Reservoir Park.

“They’re really soft and cuddly, pretty friendly,” said Hellertown Police Chief Jim Baitinger.

Fair Dinkum, or true story for us Pennsylvanians, these are Hellertown’s now famous visitors.

Two kangaroos that happened to be stopping to take a bathroom break and stretch their legs as they were passing through the borough on their way home to Halifax, Pennsylvania after a visit at a daycare.

“I’ve never encountered kangaroos in my entire career. The officers there, there is 44 years amongst them, and they never encountered kangaroos. But this is one day. This will definitely be written down in the books,” said Baitinger.

It is a story so unique it has people asking, is it Hellertown or Down Under?

“People automatically assume what happened: They escaped from a zoo, there was a big roundup, our officers were boxing kangaroos. It was nothing like that. It was a sweet encounter. It’s a great story,” said Baitinger.

“I had passed one of the officers three times as I was riding circles in town and I didn’t want him to think I was being suspicious so I stopped I said hey would you happen to know a place to let me kangaroos out a little and he looked at me a little funny like you’re kidding, then he saw the ears in my passenger seat,” said Matt Aldinger, the owner of the kangaroos and Aldinger Farms.

Chief Baitinger says not only is it a good day for the department, but it is also shining a light on Aldinger Farms and the kangaroos that provide therapy to people in the commonwealth.

The kangaroos were just heading home after a long day’s work.

“It is more of a meet and greet get people out see something people wouldn’t see on a normal day. It’s a really big hit in retirement communities,” said Aldinger.

We did have to ask the question to Chief Baitinger: what do you think the kangaroos thought of Hellertown?

“They obviously loved it. Everybody loves Hellertown,” he said.

Baitinger hopes a kangaroo reunion is in their future.
