SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.- Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is delivering its first American-built excavators and large loaders.
They’re rolling off the assembly line in south-central Pennsylvania.
Volvo CE, which, like Mack Trucks, is owned by Sweden’s Volvo Group, pledged last year to bolster its U.S.-based machine assembly.
This week, its plant in Shippensburg began manufacturing the heavy-duty excavators and loaders.
A total of 11 additional models will be produced in Shippensburg, the company said. The expansion brings Volvo CE’s North American production portfolio to 30 machine models, including excavators, wheel loaders and compactors.
Volvo CE acquired the site and its road development division from Ingersoll Rand in 2007 and established its North American headquarters there in 2012. It employs about 750 people.
At this week’s event, Volvo CE also announced its ambition to grow its business with Pennsylvania-based suppliers by 30% by 2030.
Volvo CE has several manufacturing facilities across Asia and Europe, as well as a plant in Brazil. The Shippensburg facility is its only U.S. hub.
