A 20-year-old Upper Darby man has been charged with first-degree murder after admitting to police that he stabbed his mother to death following an argument at their home on Monday afternoon.
Quadir Ford confessed to killing 51-year-old Michelle Fleming during a confrontation at their residence on South State Road, according to court documents. Ford has also been charged with theft with the preliminary hearing scheduled for May 19.
Deadly Confrontation Leaves Locals in Shock
Officers discovered Fleming’s body in the kitchen of the family’s home in the 4600 block of South State Road around 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Initially, they were responding to a call that informed them a woman inside the house had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Upon arrival, officers found that the woman had suffered as many as 12 stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. A man had been outside the home, shouting that his mom had died.
Ford – another of the victim’s sons – was arrested hours later after police tracked Fleming’s stolen cellphone to Springfield Township, where they conducted a traffic stop on her missing vehicle.
The deadly confrontation between mother and son has shocked the tight-knit Delaware County community, where domestic violence incidents continue to impact families across the Philadelphia region. Ford now faces murder charges as he awaits his preliminary hearing scheduled for May 19.
Witness Discovers Victim After Returning Home
An unidentified witness who lived at the residence made the grim discovery after returning from work shortly after 4 p.m. Monday. The witness had left earlier that day while both Fleming and Ford were present at the home on South State Road.
Upon finding Fleming unresponsive in the kitchen, the witness quickly realized that both Fleming’s cellphone and her 2013 GMC Arcadia were missing from the property. The witness used a phone locator app to track the missing device, which showed the phone’s location on the 100 block of Baltimore Pike in Springfield Township.
Police responded to the tracked location and spotted a vehicle matching the description of Fleming’s GMC driving along the 700 block of West Sproul Road. Officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested Ford, who was driving the stolen vehicle.
Suspect Confesses and Reveals Evidence Location
During questioning by investigators, Ford admitted to stabbing his mother to death following their argument on Monday. The 20-year-old also told police where they could find the murder weapon and other evidence used in the attack.
The accused directed officers to a trashcan in the rear of the South State Road property, where investigators recovered the knife used in the stabbing. Police also found gloves and a mask that Ford had worn during the attack, according to court documents. The knife still had blood coating the blade when officers retrieved it from the trash.
