VisitErie has named Ben Huggler executive director of the Erie Sports Commission, elevating a longtime staff member who has helped guide the organization’s growth and success in sports tourism across the region.
Huggler, who has served as the commission’s events services director since 2018 and as interim executive director since May 2026, brings more than 15 years of experience in planning and managing national sporting events. During his tenure with the Erie Sports Commission, he has played a key role in hosting and supporting more than 675 events that generated an estimated $120 million in economic impact for Erie County.
Under Huggler’s leadership and involvement, the commission expanded its event portfolio from 57 events in 2018 to 86 events in 2025. Major events during that period included the 2021 NCAA Women’s Frozen Four, the 2022 Great Race and the 2024 Major League Fishing General Tire Team Series, helping strengthen Erie’s reputation as a sports tourism destination.
The Erie Sports Commission also received national recognition during that time. In 2023, the organization earned Sports ETA’s Sports Commission of the Year and Event Marketing Campaign of the Year awards, highlighting its impact and innovation in the sports tourism industry.
Mark Jeanneret, president and CEO of VisitErie and former executive director of the Erie Sports Commission, praised Huggler’s leadership and contributions to the organization.
“Ben has been a valuable part of the Erie Sports Commission for many years, and his leadership, dedication and expertise have consistently strengthened our organization,” Jeanneret said. “His strategic thinking, professionalism and passion for the industry make him the right person to lead the organization into its next chapter.”
In addition to his work with the commission, Huggler holds the Sports Tourism Strategist (STS) designation through Sports ETA. He serves on the board of directors for the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail Alliance and is treasurer of the Executive Committee for PA Sports.

The appointment comes as the Erie Sports Commission continues to attract high-profile events to the region, driving tourism, economic activity and national exposure for Erie County.
