Two 13-year-olds sustained serious injuries Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle. The teens were crossing Avonia Road at a marked crosswalk in Fairview Township, according to the Pennsylvania State Police.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:49 p.m. at the intersection of Avonia Road and Oakwilde Drive. State police said a 2019 Nissan Altima traveling south on Avonia Road approached the intersection as three juveniles were attempting to cross the roadway.
Investigators reported that two juvenile females riding electric scooters stopped at the crosswalk and activated the pedestrian crossing lights before entering the roadway. As they crossed, a juvenile male began crossing Avonia Road from the opposite side of the intersection. Police said the driver failed to yield to the pedestrians in the crosswalk and struck one of the female juveniles and the male juvenile.
Both injured pedestrians, a 13-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy from Fairview, were transported by the West County Paramedic Association to UPMC Hamot with suspected serious injuries. Authorities said the injuries were serious but not life-threatening. A third juvenile involved in the crossing was not injured.
Police identified the driver as Robert L. Webster, 49, of McKean, who was not injured in the crash. The report did not list any charges at the time of release.
State police noted that the juveniles were wearing bicycle helmets during the incident. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Fairview Volunteer Fire Department, West County Paramedic Association, Fairview School District, and Eagle Auto Service.
The incident remains under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police, Girard Station.
