A number of musical instruments that were part of the Pennsylvania Treasury’s unclaimed property program were donated to Harrison-Morton Middle School in Allentown this week.
The instruments were donated to the Pennsylvania Music Preservation Society, PAMPS, which connected with the school, according to a news release from Treasurer Stacy Garrity’s office.
Representatives from PAMP and the Allentown School District traveled to Harrisburg to receive the donation, which included a keyboard, violin, cello, eight guitars, a tom and snare drum, as well as cases and accessories. They valued roughly $1,600.
“Thank you to Treasurer Garrity and PA Music Preservation Society for donating instruments to the Allentown School District for our Harrison-Morton Middle School students,” Jessika Gross, Harrison-Morton Middle School band and orchestra director, said in the release. “This incredible gift allows us to lend instruments to more young musicians, remove financial barriers, and expand our music program at HMMS. We are so grateful for your investment in our kids!”
The instruments were under the treasury’s care and were reported by police and colleges in the state, according to the release. When the items’ owners are not known and can’t be returned to someone, the treasury can donate them.
Unclaimed property that the treasury cares for includes jewelry, coins, collectibles, contents of safe deposit boxes, dormant bank accounts, abandoned stocks and uncashed checks. More information may be found here, patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property.
