A penguin pool party strikes us as the epitome of summer fun, and this crew of Magellanic penguins is certainly taking cliff diving to the next level. Despite being only about 2 feet tall, they manage to easily slip off the rocks in their enclosure at the Philadelphia Zoo. The first brave one eyes the edge before taking the plunge, and the rest follow suit.

The caption from the zoo gives us their background: “Our new colony of Magellanic penguins is diving, swimming and splashing through their outdoor habitat at Hollenstein Ross Penguin Point!” They clearly love their new home.

TikTok has a special affinity for penguins, and viewers did not disappoint. @Emily won the top comment with, “I actually caught myself going ‘weeee!’ out loud when the first penguin jumped.” Yup, same.

Why Do Penguins Dive From High Rocks Into the Water?

Most birds fly, but not penguins. They’re 1 of about 60 flightless birds alive today (and that’s out of more than 10,000 species). Penguins are in good company with the ostrich, the kiwi, and many others, but they’re the only ones who adapted to swimming in their place (and still live in modern times). These sleek avians can swim 15 mph and dive more than 150 feet deep. Why do they have these unique characteristics? Hunting fish, of course (they prefer anchovies).

Their natural breeding ground lies near rocky terrain, so this black-and-white bird understands that type of ground. It’s normal for these dudes to need to jump into the water, either from the shore or sea ice, though it’s not always so high.

This isn’t the first time penguins have been observed diving from high distances into the water, though. It seems that gathering in a large group and then having one intrepid leader test the waters is kinda this bird’s M.O. Luckily, they had that brave (read: crazy) bird ready to take the plunge and kick-start the whole waddle’s dive for the day.
