The Pirates have recalled right-handed pitcher Khristian Curtis from Triple-A Indianapolis ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the Dodgers. Fellow right-handed pitcher Antwone Kelly was optioned to Indianapolis.
Curtis made his MLB debut against the Guardians in the second game of a doubleheader on July 18. The 24-year-old threw five-scoreless innings, scattering a pair of hits, walking two and striking out three.
In 21 appearances/17 starts between Indianapolis and Double-A Altoona this season, Curtis is 3-8 with a 5.10 ERA. He’s allowed 47 earned runs on 71 hits with 45 walks and 104 strikeouts in 83 innings. Curtis is considered Pittsburgh’s 15th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline.
Kelly tossed a scoreless eighth inning in the Pirates’ loss to the Dodgers on Saturday. The 22-year-old has made four relief appearances for the Pirates this season and is 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA. He’s spent the rest of the season with Indianapolis, where he is 5-5 with a 4.09 ERA in 21 appearances/15 starts.
