SWB RAILRIDERS: Cabrera powers victory over Charlotte in series finale – Scranton Times-Tribune

Oswaldo Cabrera homered twice among his three hits Sunday afternoon and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders knocked off the Charlotte Knights in the series finale, 9-5, to gain a split of the six-game set at PNC Field in Moosic.

Jasson Dominguez also homered and drove in four runs for the RailRiders (28-20, 64-57), who scored in five consecutive innings starting in the bottom of the third.

With two outs, Dominguez walked. J.C. Escarra hit a high fly ball that the center fielder lost in the sun and dropped in for a double, scoring Dominguez. Marco Luciano followed with a single to score Escarra and make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, again with two outs, the RailRiders extended their advantage. Kenedy Corona walked and stole second. After Anthony Volpe walked, Dominguez belted a three-run home run for a 5-0 lead.

Jason Matthews’ RBI single in the top of the fifth put the Knights on the scoreboard. But Cabrera got the run back in the bottom-half of the inning with his first home run to right field.

Charlotte struck for two runs in the top of the sixth to get within 6-3. But Dominguez singled home Ernesto Martinez Jr., who led off with a double, in the bottom of the sixth to give the RailRiders a 7-3 lead.

A bunt groundout by Rikuu Nishida scored Andy Weber and pulled the Knights within 7-4. Again, the RailRiders answered. Luciano drew a leadoff walk and Cabrera hit his second home run of the game to right field for a 9-4 lead.

Weber’s one-out home run in the top of the ninth capped the scoring.

Travis MacGregor started the bullpen game for the RailRiders and pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts. Luis Gil (1-0) threw 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, no walks and striking out three to get the win.

Prior to Sunday’s game, the New York Yankees recalled righthanded pitcher Brendan Beck. Pitchers Harrison Cohen and Trent Sellers were promoted to the RailRiders from Double-A Somerset.

This week, the RailRiders play a key six-game series at Worcester starting Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. at Polar Park. The RailRiders are 1.5 games behind the Indianapolis Indians in the International League second-half standings, while the Red Sox are 3.5 back.
