After a century of life, service, and memories, World War II veteran Frank Pillitteri is celebrating his 100th birthday surrounded by the Erie community he has always called home.
Family and friends from across the country gathered Saturday to celebrate Pillitteri’s milestone birthday and honor the legacy he has built over the past 100 years.
Born and raised in Erie’s “Little Italy,” Pillitteri served in the U.S. Army from November 1944 through August 1946, including time stationed in Germany during and after World War II.
Today, Pillitteri is a father of five, grandfather of eight, and great-grandfather of one. His family says he has spent his life showing them the importance of hard work, giving back, and leaving something meaningful behind.
“I feel really good that I have so many friends,” Pillitteri said. “I didn’t know I had so many friends. I’m really surprised.”
As he reflected on reaching 100, Pillitteri shared a simple lesson he learned over the years: kindness goes a long way.
“When I got older, I realized you’ve got to be nice to people,” he said. “Even if you don’t like somebody, be nice. It ain’t gonna hurt nothing.”
After 100 years filled with family, friendships, service, and countless memories, Pillitteri says he continues to appreciate each day as a gift.
