Every successful first day of school is the result of thousands of unseen moments that happen long before our children ever set foot on our campuses.
While our families are busy checking off school supply lists, picking out first-day outfits and preparing for a new academic year, an entire community of dedicated educators and professionals has been hard at work. Their mission? To ensure that when our students walk through our doors, they are stepping into spaces that are safe, welcoming and deeply primed for learning.
In just a few weeks, more than 16,000 students will return to the Allentown School District. For our youngest scholars, it will be their first day of pre-kindergarten, which is a milestone moment. For others, it marks another year of discovery, growth and achievement. And for our seniors, it represents the final first day of a transformative chapter in their educational journey.
Before the first bus rolls down the street and the first classroom door opens, more than 2,600 dedicated members of the Allentown School District team have been actively preparing for this moment.
All summer long, our custodians have been meticulously preparing our facilities, our maintenance teams have completed critical infrastructure projects and our transportation staff has crafted efficient, safe routes. Our technology teams have ensured classrooms are fully connected, while our food service professionals have prepared to nourish young minds.
In their classrooms, teachers and specialized educators have been organizing spaces, engaging in high-impact professional learning, refining curriculum and preparing to welcome a new cohort of eager learners. At the same time, our specialized student support services, nurses, instructional aides, administrative staff, safety personnel and operational teams have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to cultivate environments where every child can succeed.
This work often goes unseen, but make no mistake: it is foundational to our success.
Two years ago, we launched Lighting the Way: A Blueprint for Innovation and Excellence 2030, our strategic plan designed to transform learning, teaching and opportunity across the Allentown School District. Every decision we make, every investment we prioritize, and every initiative we implement is directly grounded in that shared vision.
Because of the collective dedication of our students, families, School Board of Directors, staff and community partners, we built extraordinary momentum throughout the 2025–2026 school year. We strengthened high-quality, rigorous instruction, expanded innovative learning models, and continued creating equitable pathways to success for every single learner.
Those targeted investments are delivering measurable results. Our graduation rates increased by 6.3%, and our multilingual learners achieved a remarkable 54% growth rate, significantly outperforming state benchmarks.
Our fiscal health and operational foundation have strengthened just as dramatically. S&P Global Ratings recently upgraded our bond credit rating to A-, reflecting an unprecedented four-notch improvement in less than four years.
This milestone lowers borrowing costs and allows us to stretch taxpayer dollars further as we break ground on essential capital projects and modern facilities across the district, including a new Pre-K to 8 Academy and a Family Resource Center designed in partnership with local civic leaders to connect families directly with healthcare, nutrition and social services.
At the same time, we remain deeply committed to supporting our community through local tax relief programs designed to support eligible senior citizens and residents on fixed incomes.
Coupled with our academic progress, this level of financial stability and momentum is something our district has not experienced in decades.
We recognize that meaningful, lasting change takes continuous effort, and our work is far from finished. Yet, these milestones demonstrate that our strategic direction is sound, our fiscal discipline is real and our investments are delivering tangible results.
As we turn the page to a new school year, these achievements are not a destination, but a springboard. We remain steadfast in our commitment to continuing Lighting the Way, pushing boundaries, expanding access and ensuring every student receives an exceptional education.
Together with our educators, families, civic leaders, local businesses and community organizations, we look forward to carrying this momentum into the year ahead as we build a brighter, bolder future for all Allentown scholars.
