NORRISTOWN, Pa. — Police have arrested a woman for multiple felony charges related to the theft of more than $50,000 from her previous employer, SMB in Bala Cynwyd.
According to a news release from Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele, Jennifer Rivera, 41, of Bala Cynwyd, turned herself in to Lower Merion Police on Monday.
The DA says in June, Lower Merion Police were called to SMB, a law firm marketing agency, where the CEO and Senior Finance Director reported that an internal financial review found that employee Jennifer Rivera had used a company issued credit card for personal expenses, dating back to September 2024.
Lower Merion Detectives began an extensive review of the business’ financial records and interviewed individuals employed by SMB. Police say the investigation found that Rivera had spent company funds of $1,339 on videography/photography services for a Bar Mitzvah, more than $25,000 on a vacation for her family and friends, and spent $25,596.68 on clothing, bathroom accessories and other personal items on Amazon using the business’ Amazon account.
Steele says the theft from the company by Rivera totaled $50,243.31, which Rivera used for personal gain. The audit also found that Rivera had booked a future trip to the Bahamas for her family using company AmEx points, worth more than $9,000, which she was not authorized to do, according to the release.
The DA says after turning herself in, Rivera was charged with four counts of Theft by Deception, Receiving Stolen Property and Access Device Fraud, all third-degree felonies. She was arraigned and her bail was set at $25,000 unsecured, with an additional provision of no contact with anyone at SMB.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m., Sept. 2.
