An Upper Darby institution is closing. Pica’s Restaurant on West Chester Pike announced Thursday that it will close this summer.
The restaurant, which has served generations of Delaware County residents, posted a notice on its website and social media stating “after nearly 70 wonderful years of serving the Upper Darby community, it is with heavy hearts that we announce that Pica’s Restaurant, Upper Darby will be closing in the summer 2025.”
In 1956, the restaurant moved from 62nd and Race in West Philly to 7803 West Chester Pike in Upper Darby.
“From our humble beginnings in West Philadelphia founded by Frank Pica Sr., to our cherished location here in Upper Darby, which was led by Frank Pica Jr. for many decades and now, we, the third generation, have been honored to be a part of your lives and celebrations.
“Pica’s Upper Darby, has been a gathering place, where families have come together, friendships have blossomed, and countless memories have been made. You have been more than just customers to us; you are family.”
In 2017 the family opened a second location in the West Chester area and in 2021, Frank Pica Jr., the second-generation owner passed away.
The Pica’s name reached a celebrity level in 2014 when Upper Darby-born star Tina Fey enjoyed food on national television while “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon had to be put on hold.
Reactions to the news have been pouring in.
“So sad to hear this. Oh so many memories as a child and now as a mother, as my children now have memories. Thank you for that and something I will and my children will cherish forever,” responded one woman.
“Grew up with Pica’s Friday and Saturday night dates after the drive-in. I worked at the city line driving range and pica’s was our stop after work. Only a few tables and the bar what great memories,” was the reaction of another patron.
The notice said the family hopes to open a smaller location in Delaware County and the West Chester restaurant will remain open. Gift cards can be redeemed there and the closing date has not been determined.
