A discount retailer specializing in Amazon overstock merchandise will open its newest location in Allentown later this month, bringing what it describes as a treasure hunt shopping experience to the city.

Mr. Bins announced it will open May 24 at 2300 Lehigh St. in the former Big Lots building. The store bills itself as the biggest Amazon overstock store in Pennsylvania and will operate as what it calls the biggest treasure hunt experience in Allentown.

The business model centers on receiving tens of thousands of Amazon pallets annually, emptying the contents into bins and allowing customers to search for deals. All items in the bins are sold at one flat price that changes daily, with a monthly calendar posted to inform shoppers of each day’s pricing.

The store will be open Sunday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Among the merchandise offerings are thousands of Amazon clothing items released each week. These items are packaged in mystery bags and priced at $6 each. Customers can open bags before purchasing to examine contents.

The company anticipates long lines for the grand opening and advises early arrival.

The former tenant of the retail space, Big Lots, announced in July 2024 it was closing all stores, which totaled about 150 stores in 28 states. The chain cited inflation and difficulties in keeping up with competitors as reasons for the closures.
