Woman who lost daughter in Strip District shooting is calling for answers
PITTSBURGH —
A mother is calling for justice after her daughter was shot and killed in the Strip District earlier this month.
“When she loved you, she loved you. And she loved hard,” Carolyn Morrison told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 Reporter Jordan Cioppa. “If she was your friend, she was your friend to the very end.”
Carolyn Morrison said her daughter, La’Eva Morrison, was loving, caring, compassionate and the life of the party.
When she wasn’t working at UPMC Magee Women’s Hospital, the mom of two loved to spend time with her friends and family.
“She was a people person,” Carolyn Morrison said. “She loved being around people and they loved being around her.”
On Aug. 2, La’Eva Morrison’s life came to an abrupt end at 34 years old. According to Pittsburgh police, she was shot in the face in the Strip District. She left behind two daughters, ages 2 and 5.
Carolyn Morrison said she rushed to the hospital when she got the call.
“Someone from the street called me and told me,” the victim’s mother said. “And I went to Mercy Hospital, I seen a bunch of people, and I jumped out the car, and I said, ‘Tell me it ain’t so.’ And they said, ‘Eva’s gone,’ and I lost it. I lost it.”
A witness who wished to remain anonymous said they were with La’Eva Morrison the night of the shooting. According to the witness’s account, La’Eva Morrison and the witness were involved in a fight with two women.
After the fight ended, the witness said they started walking the other way when the gun was fired at La’Eva Morrison.
“She wasn’t a threat. She didn’t have a weapon on her. She was walking away. That’s not self-defense, that’s a retaliation,” Carolyn Morrison said.
Police said at the time three people were detained, however, no charges were filed.
According to the witness, they were detained.
Carolyn Morrison said she has yet to receive answers from Pittsburgh police. She wanted to know why there haven’t been any arrests.
“It ain’t about me. It’s about her babies getting justice, and Imma get justice. I (will) die getting justice. If that’s the last thing I do, I (will) get justice for her babies,” Carolyn Morrison said.
Pittsburgh police did not immediately respond to our request for more information on the investigation.
