(WJET/WFXP)– One of two parents charged in the wake of their then 2-year-old son suffering a critical head injury that required flying to Pittsburgh has pleaded no contest to several charges.
Online court documents show 28-year-old Mathew Engle of Erie pleaded no contest to aggravated assault and two separate counts of endangering the welfare of a child before Judge David Ridge on Wednesday.

Court documents show Engle was initially going to trial in May 2025 but was moved several times until the no contest plea was entered this week. Documents also showed prosecutors chose not to pursue another count of aggravated assault, along with misdemeanor simple assault and reckless endangerment as part of the plea.
Engle was charged alongside the child’s mother, 27-year-old Megan Bokros, over two incidents that happened in the summer of 2024, where police said their son suffered two head injuries and did not seek medical treatment, despite him showing signs of a traumatic head injury.
The first alleged incident happened on August 27, 2024, when he fell down the stairs, fell unconscious, was vomiting the next day and complained about pain from a concussion. The second incident happened on September 4, 2024, when Engle allegedly pulled him out of their car and hit his head in the process.
Case moves forward for July 4 shooting suspect
Those incidents, Erie police said, caused him to suffer a cracked skull that required him to be flown to Pittsburgh for treatment.
According to the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, Engle’s sentencing is set for October 26 before Judge David Ridge.
Court documents show that Bokros’ trial for two separate counts of felony child endangerment is scheduled to begin on September 8.
