For the record: While Erie McDowell comes in for its season opener, Mentor has a game under its belt. The Cardinals answered a lot of questions in their win over Olmsted Falls, showing a high-scoring offense despite most of the starters being new from last year and playing lockdown defense in the second half of the game by allowing the Bulldogs to score only three points. The Cardinals’ 355-yard offensive performance was fueled by junior Brogan Jones’ 285-yard passing night. Senior Logan Berwald hauled in 235 of those yards on 12 catches. The Cardinals’ run game gleaned only 50 yards on 24 carries, so that area will look to kick it up a notch this week. Defensively, Marcus Cvetichan picked off a pair of passes to lead the Cardinals’ effort.
