Fiery, three-vehicle crash shuts down Squirrel Hill Tunnel in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH —
State police said three vehicles collided and caught fire inside the Squirrel Hill Tunnel on Friday evening, which caused the tunnel to be closed in both directions.
Thick, black smoke was seen coming from the tunnel on a PennDOT traffic camera.
“Emergency personnel are on scene. Drivers should use alternate routes and expect delays,” a PennDOT spokesperson said.
Traffic cameras showed police cars blocking I-376 as eastbound traffic was being diverted off the Parkway East at the Squirrel Hill/Homestead exit just before the tunnel.
The tunnel has reopened for traffic headed westbound toward Pittsburgh, but it’s still closed to eastbound traffic.
Two people had minor injuries in the crash, police said.
