More than 100 local students traded the classroom for Splash Lagoon on Friday, combining education with a day of fun during Spirit of Erie Week.
Around 130 students from Eagles Nest Leadership Corporation took part in a complimentary day at the indoor water park.

Before hitting the slides, students learned about water, the history and construction of Splash Lagoon and what goes on behind the scenes at the park.
“About water safety and how to be safe in water. The Scotts also gave them a rundown about the history of Splash Lagoon and how we got such a facility,” said Ryan Cherry, general manager of Splash Lagoon.
The day was designed to give students a hands-on experience outside the classroom while also giving them a chance to enjoy one of Erie’s best-known attractions.
“We try to engage our children in different genres of life, different areas of life, and it seems to work, said Archbishop Dwane Brock, founder of the Eagles Nest.
After the educational portion, students received complimentary admission to Splash Lagoon to enjoy some fun.
“But there really are some of those dangers. So, I hope that the kids were able to take away some of those important factors and recognize the job that lifeguards do and the importance of listening to the rules of the facility. Listening to the rules of lifeguards to keep them safe,” said Cherry.
Archbishop Brock said the goal was to give students a memorable experience that combined education, community and fun outside of a traditional class lecture setting.
