BERN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Crews responded to a house fire in Berks County Saturday afternoon.
The fire was reported just after 1:30 p.m. on the 2700 block of Leisczs Bridge Road in Bern Township.
Officials said two people were inside the home and unable to evacuate.
Bern Township police arrived at the scene and found smoke coming from the home. Officers confirmed the occupants were trapped inside.
Before fire crews arrived, a police officer helped an occupant escape through a front window, officials said.
Firefighters stretched two handlines from Engine 66 and quickly brought the fire under control.
Additional crews assisted with searches of the home and helped remove multiple cats and rabbits, officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Bern Township fire marshal.
