Evelyn L. (Reider) Sands

OBITUARY

Evelyn L. (Reider) Sands died peacefully in her residence on August 20 at Celebration Villa in Exeter. She formerly lived in Mertztown. She was the widow of Ronald C. Sands, Sr. who died on October 12, 2004. Born in Reading on June 5, 1938 to John W. and Grace E. (Hinnershitz) Reider.

Evelyn graduated from Reading High School in 1956 and worked as an Executive Secretary at Vanity Fair in the 1960s. She also volunteered for a time at the former Humane Society in Reading. In recent years, she worked at the Reading Berks School Employees Credit Union.

Survived by her brother Ralph D. Reider husband of Lola (Reading, PA) step sons Ronald Sands, Jr husband of Joy (Hamburg) and David Sands (New Smyrna Beach, FL) and step daughter Susan Gring wife of John (Lady Lake, FL). She was preceded in death by her son Steven D. Sands in 1998. Also survived by her niece Lisa (Reider) Gibbel wife of Dean (Muhlenburg Township) and nephew Jeffrey Reider husband of Shelly (Mt. Joy, PA).

Affectionately known as “Grandma Ev” by her grand and great grandchildren. Grandchildren Wendy Schofer wife of Joel (Chesapeake, VA). Jennifer Person wife of Scott (Hesston, KS). Michael Stewart (Hamburg). Kyle Painter (Daytona, FL). Great Grandchildren Erin, Nicholas, Ellie and Jason.

Over the years Evelyn rescued and cared for several horses and numerous dogs and cats. She also had a close knit group of friends that would often lend a needed hand. She remained very close to childhood friends Shirley Naus and Joanne Yetto over the years.

Special thanks for to the Celebration Villa and AseraCare Hospice staff both who provided excellent care for Evelyn during her stay.

Per her instructions, we will not have a viewing or funeral service. Her ashes will be spread in a private service on the property where she once lived. She wished for no flowers: Donations in her memory can be sent to the Humane Pennsylvania Freedom Center for Animal Life-Saving at 1801 N 11th St, Reading, PA 19604.
