It was quite a week for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons. First, manager John Russell was named International League Manager of the Year after leading the team to its first North Division title since 2002. Then, pitcher Jeremy Cummings threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in team history, 5-0, against the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field in New York. He walked four and struck out nine. … Drew Babcanec’s 10-yard touchdown run on Lakeland’s first play of overtime and Spencer Clauss-Walton’s extra point gave the Chiefs a 14-13 win over Valley View in the season opener. Kyle Passeri scored on a 10-yard run on the Cougars possession in OT, but Justin Virbitsky and Joe Lemoncelli combined to block the extra point. … Andrew Torch led Carbondale Area to a 20-16 opening win over Athens. He had 82 rushing yards, 118 receiving yards, completed a 30-yard pass, scored two touchdowns and had an interception. … Michael Olivieri sank a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole of the front nine at Stone Hedge to give Abington Heights a 5-4 win over Scranton Prep in a Lackawanna Golf League Southern Division match. It was the Cavaliers’ first division loss in seven years.

Ben Gamel of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders was named International League Most Valuable Player, while Al Pedrique was chosen Manager of the Year. Gamel also was named to the league’s postseason all-star team along with teammates Gary Sanchez at catcher, Donovan Solano at second base and Aaron Judge in the outfield. One day later, Gamel was traded by the Yankees to the Seattle Mariners for a pair of minor-league pitchers. … West Scranton forced six turnovers, including four fumbles and two interceptions by Austin Lipowitch, in a 41-10 victory over Wallenpaupack. Offensively, Tamon Brown ran 13 times for 152 yards and three touchdowns for the Invaders. … Jennifer Korty of Forest City won the 42nd annual Cliff Robbins Memorial Cross Country girls race, covering the 3.1-mile course at Misericordia’s Letterkenny Fields in 19 minutes, 27 seconds. Hannah Perkins from Montrose was second in 20:10. … Rachael Tirjan scored four first-half goals as Wallenpaupack defeated North Pocono, 7-1, in the girls final of the Jamie Kotula Soccer Classic. In the boys final, Gio Vega’s second goal lifted Holy Cross to a 2-1 win over Western Wayne.
