At least four people were injured overnight, officials said, when the driver of a van plowed into two police cruisers and another vehicle along Girard Avenue in Philly’s Brewerytown section early Monday.
According to police, the incident happened at about 2:23 a.m. when the driver of a black Mercedes van driving along Girard Avenue struck a vehicle at the intersection at 28th Street.
In a morning update, officials said, the incident happened when a 56-year-old man, who was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, was driving at a high rate of speed eastbound on Girard Avenue when officers investigating a burglary-in-progress on the block heard his vehicle approaching.
The driver then proceeded to strike a vehicle before his van hit a marked police cruiser and continued, slamming into an unmarked police vehicle, officials said.
After this impact, the van went airborne and landed on the unmarked police vehicle, according to police.
Following the crash, officials said, the driver exited the vehicle and was taken into custody by police at the scene.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene and no other injuries were reported.
An investigation into this incident, officials said, remains ongoing.
