State and local police plan to proactively seeking out impaired drivers in Berks County over the coming weeks.
Troopers from the Hamburg station announced Thursday that they plan to conduct stepped-up DUI patrols over upcoming weekends in northern Berks County as well as a sobriety checkpoint in an undisclosed location.
The dedicated patrols aim to spot drivers who exhibit signs of impairment from alcohol or drugs, troopers said.
The initiative is aimed at curtailing the number of people killed or seriously injured from alcohol- or drug-related crashes, officials said, adding that they plan to announce the results of stepped-up patrols.
Municipal police departments throughout Berks will also coordinate roving patrols and a sobriety checkpoint on a well-traveled road through the end of September, officials announced.
That effort is being done under the umbrella of the North Central Regional DUI Enforcement program, which equips, funds and coordinates the municipal police DUI enforcement in eleven Pennsylvania counties.
