It’s an evening you’ll want to stay weather aware, as the warmth and humidity are fueling the potential for some gusty storms late this afternoon through this evening.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the entire area, in effect through midnight tonight. This highlights the potential for strong thunderstorms to produce damaging wind gusts and large hail, which are the two main severe weather concerns. An isolated tornado or two is also possible, but would be much more isolated.
Any thunderstorm, severe or not, can always produce frequent lightning and heavy downpours. Given the high humidity, any slow-moving storm would also be capable of producing localized flooding and a quick inch or two of rain.
Thunderstorms are just now starting to develop as of 4pm across parts of eastern PA and northern NJ. Expect storms to become more widespread and intensify late this afternoon through this evening as they generally drop from north to south, or more specifically northwest to southeast, across the area through this evening.
The most likely time for severe storms is late afternoon through mid-evening, or roughly from 5pm through 11pm from north to south across eastern PA and New Jersey.
