ALLENTOWN, Pa. – A local livestock club weaved a woolen shawl celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary that will go up for sale at the Allentown Fair.
The Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club created the 100% woolen shawl, according to a news release from Penn State Extension – Lehigh County.
The shawl will be sold at the livestock sale at the fair on Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.
This is the fifth year that the club has made a shawl, under the direction and guidance of Roger and Nancy Bowman.
The proceeds from the sale go to charities in the Lehigh Valley, according to the news release.
Members chose the colors, designed the shawl, and completed the weaving project.
Margaret Wright, a member of the “Baaad Girls” sheep-to-shawl team, taught club members a new weaving technique called “over-shot,” to help them create the shawl with red and white striped, blue weft and a star pattern, the Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club said.
The Lehigh County 4-H Livestock Club said Winterside Farm provided yarn and weaving equipment.
The shawl was woven on a rigid needle loom and the wool used includes Corriedale wool yarn from sheep raised in Berks County, according to the news release.
The 4-H Youth have chosen to divide the proceeds of the shawl auction between “Special Fairs Fund” of The Great Allentown Fair Foundation and Battle Borne, both organizations in the Lehigh Valley.
