The Erie community came together at the Rebich Investments Amphitheater for the inaugural Gem City Soul Night, an event created in direct response to community feedback and designed to celebrate the city’s diversity through the power of music.
Under clear skies and warm summer weather, crowds gathered in large numbers to enjoy an evening filled with R&B, Motown, and soul music. Organizers said the event was about more than entertainment. It was an opportunity to bring people together and highlight the diverse voices that help make Erie a stronger community.
“We have a diverse community, and we want everybody’s voices to be heard,” said Maurice Troop, co-coordinator of Gem City Soul Night and leader of The Breeze Band. “That just makes us have a stronger community when we’re all together.”
The evening featured performances that showcased the lasting influence of soul music and its impact across genres. Musicians emphasized that soul music extends far beyond a single category, touching everything from country and rock to pop and contemporary R&B.
“There’s some soul singers, soul artists, and country music, rock, pop, all sorts of music,” said Brittany Morton, lead vocalist for The Groove. “Soul is expressed in music, and music is what helps everyone and all of us. It gets us going, so it’s part of everything.”
Troop echoed those sentiments, noting the genre’s foundational role in music history.
“If you look at American music or world music, soul music was definitely one of the basics of that, so it’s in everything that we listen to,” he said.
The event also highlighted the unifying nature of music, something organizers and performers believe is especially important for the Erie community.
“Soul music is very important to the Erie community,” said The Goat, a local DJ who participated in the event. “It brings together people from all backgrounds, demographics, everything. It’s one of those just unifying things that everyone can enjoy and share together.”
With a strong turnout and enthusiastic response from attendees, organizers say Gem City Soul Night exceeded expectations. The success of the event has already sparked conversations about the future, with hopes of making it an annual tradition.
Organizers say they are optimistic that Gem City Soul Night will return next year, continuing its mission of celebrating Erie’s diversity and bringing the community together through music.
