ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The great day has come! The Great Allentown Fair kicks off on Wednesday afternoon.

Get ready to be “udder”-ly excited.

“Just come here and be that kid again,” Staci Horvath, who works in the fair’s marketing and partnerships, said.

Now in its 174th year, the fair holds true to its deep roots in agriculture.

Jamie Brozman owns Just Enuff Angus, and showed 69 News the more than two dozen cows her family brought to the fair. Brozman also serves as Livestock Superintendent for the fair.

“Livestock production in general has decreased over the years,” she said, “but that doesn’t mean that the strong and mighty aren’t here. So we’re resilient.”

This year’s theme, in celebration of America’s semiquincentennial, is “Something Old, Something New, FOREVER RED WHITE & BLUE.“

“There’s a lot more things here than I think we’ve ever had before,” Horvath said.

Folks can still expect the typical agriculture seen every year.

“We have sheep, we have goats, we have pigs, we have the dairy cattle, and we have the beef cattle,” Brozman said. “And then there’s a rabbit and poultry barn.”

But visitors can also find the debut of some brand-new ones as well: like the capybara, billed as the largest rodent in the world.

“They’re just adorable,” Horvath said.

Hog Diggity Dogs & More brings “Camp Capybara” to the fair for the first time ever, and tells 69 News that the animals can run up to 25 miles an hour and stay underwater for up to five minutes.

Also new this year: an interactive book about the fair, courtesy of Adventures Made 4 U.

All around the fairgrounds, folks can find signs with a QR code, hold their phone cameras up to it, and click on the link that pops up. Next, just add your or your kids’ names to the story.

“In less than 30 seconds, your children will become the main character of every story,” Mike Grabarits, executive director of Adventures Made 4 U, said.

“And read his or her name multiple times throughout the story,” Ellen Kern added.

Kern authored the interactive book, Colorful Day at the Great Allentown Fair.

The book also reads itself aloud by the click of a button.

“Our books are all read aloud in multiple languages,” Grabarits said.

So how will your story end?

“I can’t spoil the ending of the book,” Kern said.

You’ll have to come to the fair to find out.

The gates open at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Legendary Motown group, Four Tops, will headline in collaboration with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m.
