The late Dr. Wayne J. Sebastianelli, a longtime Penn State sports medicine leader, will be honored at a memorial celebration hosted by the Greater Scranton Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association on Sunday, Oct. 4.
In recognition of the Jessup native’s life and legacy, the Greater Scranton Chapter will formally announce the Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli Memorial Nursing Program Endowment in his name. The endowment will benefit students enrolled in Penn State’s Nese College of Nursing Program. A commemorative plaque will also be presented to Sebastianelli’s family.
The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Waldorf, 14 Waldorf Lane, Scranton.
Matt McGloin, former Penn State and NFL quarterback and a Scranton native, plans to attend as the event’s special guest.
Sebastianelli, a Valley View High School graduate, served as director of athletic medicine for Penn State Athletics for more than 30 years and as medical director of Penn State Sports Medicine. He died May 4 at the age of 68.
A nationally respected orthopaedic surgeon, Sebastianelli gained prominence as Penn State’s football team doctor. He worked under four head coaches: Joe Paterno, Bill O’Brien, James Franklin and Matt Campbell. He served on the Big Ten Sports Medicine subcommittee on eligibility. He was also known for his work in preventing and treating athletic injuries, including concussions.
Among his various leadership positions, Sebastianelli was associate dean for clinical affairs at Penn State Hershey, University Park Regional Campus of the College of Medicine, and director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery/Rehabilitation. He was also associate chief medical officer at Penn State Health Medical Group – State College Region.
Cost to attend the event is $30 and includes pulled pork, barbecue chicken, salad, coleslaw, corn on the cob, dessert, soda, tea and coffee. A cash bar will be available.
Proceeds will benefit the Dr. Wayne J. Sebastianelli Memorial Nursing Program Endowment.
