9/4; 9:15 a.m.—Five juveniles have been charged after a video showing an assault near the Erie Canal in Rome was widely shared on social media.
According to the Rome Police Department, the assault happened Aug. 26 near the Erie Canal.
Police said they identified, located and charged the five juveniles on Sept. 2.
All five face charges of assault.
Police are not releasing their names or other identifying details because of their ages.
8/28; 4:10 p.m.—Rome Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan has issued the following statement on the incident:
“The violence depicted in the video circulating on social media is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our community.
“Rome is a community that believes in safety, respect, and accountability. I commend the Rome Police Department for taking swift action, and I am confident they will continue to pursue this investigation and hold those responsible accountable.
“Our city’s message is clear that violence has no place in Rome, and those who engage in it will be held accountable.”
8/28; 10:10 a.m.—A person was arrested after a viral video spread on social media.
The Rome Police Department reported making the arrest on Aug. 27.
Damaris Brane, 35, was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
RFD stated that “Brane is the mother of two of the juveniles seen in the video attacking the victim.”
Police are trying to speak with the male victim involved.
Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

ROME, N.Y. — The Rome Police Department is investigating an assault involving a male victim that was reportedly recorded and posted to social media.
RPD said it was alerted to the video on Aug. 26 “that appears to show a group of individuals assaulting a male victim.”
Police believe the incident to have happened in the area of the Erie Canal in the City of Rome.
RPD is investigating and is asking anyone who saw the assault, knows those involved, or has more video or information to contact the Rome Police Department TIP Line at 315-339-7744.
