Fall festival: The Newton Recreation Center will hold its annual Fall Festival on Sept. 19, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free parking. Visitors are invited to explore the “250 Faces” exhibit and time capsule, both on display in the history room/free library. Also includes local vendors, basket raffles, live music, food trucks and kids’ zone. The festival will be held rain or shine.

First choir rehearsal: The first rehearsal for the Wally Gordon Community Singers will take place Sept. 22 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, 1310 Morgan Highway, Clarks Summit. Open to those 14 years and older, no auditions required.

Lackawanna County

Clover run: The Lackawanna County 4-H Clover 5K Run and Walk will take place Sept. 13. Registration, 8:30 a.m.; event starts at 9, Blakely Borough Recreation Complex. Benefits Lackawanna County 4-H. Convention: The Northeastern Pennsylvania Volunteer Firemen’s Federation 96th annual convention will be hosted by the Grattan Singer Hose Company 1, 702 Homestead St., Simpson, Sept. 11-12. On Friday, the general session will take place at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Hospitality Night from 8 to 11, with $10 buttons, food, drinks and live music by Broken Road Duo. On Saturday, general session and voting for next year’s offices will take place at 9 a.m.; there will be a memorial service at 11 to honor all who passed over the past year in the counties the fire federation covers. The parade will take place at 2 p.m., starting at Gentex on Main Street, to the fire station. After the parade, there will be food, drinks and live music. Open to the public.

Midvalley

Fundraiser show: Valley View High School Performing Arts will hold a fundraiser comedy show to support the school’s performing arts students, Sept. 13, at the high school, 1 Columbus Drive, Archbald. Doors open at 1 p.m. with raffle baskets available; show starts at 2. The afternoon will feature a lineup of comedians, including international headliner Taylor Mason, Northeast Pennsylvania comedian Jeannine Luby and Valley View class of 1988 graduate Tim Conniff, who is producing and performing in the event. Tickets can be purchased online for $25 and at the door for $30.

Labor Day closure: The Throop Borough municipal building and DPW are closed on Monday. Grass collection will be on Tuesday.

Regional

Barn banquet: North Branch Land Trust invites community members, partners and conservationists to enjoy an evening of conversation and farm-to-table fare provided by Bank + Vine at the fifth annual Barn Banquet, Sept. 21 at Friedman Farms, 138 Wyoming Road, Dallas. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by farm-to-table dinner stations at 6. Also includes raffles. The event is a celebration of agricultural heritage in Northeast Pennsylvania and the land trust’s conservation successes of local farmlands and continuing commitment throughout the region. Trolley museum at Railfest: The Electric City Trolley Museum is participating in Railfest, taking place through Sunday on the grounds of the Steamtown National Historical Site, Scranton. It will have musical entertainment, performers from the Farm Arts Collective, rail theme caricature artist and trolley excursions. Also, a costume contest, “Life on the Railroad,” is slated for Sunday at Steamtown. Prizes will be awarded. COLTS will provide free shuttle to La Festa Italiana approximately every 20 minutes from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with stops at Steamtown’s Railfest, the Marketplace at Steamtown and La Festa at Wyoming Avenue and Linden Street. Also for Railfest weekend, Trolley Car 206 is back in its spot in front of the trolley museum’s parking lot; the repair and restoration of the car was done by HMC Tech.

Garden club: The next meeting of the Mountain View Garden Club will take place Sept. 12 at Lackawanna State Park’s Pine Lake pavilion and will be a mushroom walk with David Wasilewski from Wyoming Valley Mushroom Club, followed by a potluck lunch. Scranton

Fall festival: NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania will present its fifth annual West Scranton Fall Festival on Sept. 19, noon to 5 p.m., at Clover Field, 400 W. Locust St. The festival is a free, annual family-friendly event celebrating the fall season. The NEPA Scene live music stage will feature local talent, including DJ duo Cowgirl Pills and live music acts Tori V & The Karma and Brendan Michael Smith & The Susquehanna Boom Co. The festival will also feature food trucks, bounce houses and face painting for the kids, free caricature portraits, the Steamtown National Historic Site Ring of Fire, a live animal demonstration, mini golf, booths from local community partners providing activities and giveaways, and free popcorn.
