Schuylkill Valley 38, Octorara 7

At Leesport, Schuylkill Valley put on a clinic on both sides of the ball Friday in a 38-7 nonleague football victory over Octorara.

The Panthers (1-1) ran to a 35-0 halftime advantage on the Braves (0-2), who were shut out until the final 26 seconds.

On a humid night, attendance and spirits ran high for the home crowd.

“I think, as a team, we all played good,” said Schuylkill Valley kicker/punter Reece Wamsher, who was 7-for-7 on PATs and ended the night with a field goal. “There was a little negative … penalties in the game. But for the most part, we played really well. It was a nice second game to get our first win of the season.”

Wamsher may have been referring to a scuffle in the second quarter that resulted in offsetting personal fouls. The Panthers did have six penalties, but they were overshadowed by Octorara’s 11, a key reason the Braves didn’t score the final seconds.

In Week 3, the Panthers will look to continue to serve the home crowd against Newport — which dropped a 52-7 game at Lancaster Catholic on Friday. Meanwhile, Octorara will continue looking for its first win of the season at home in a 7 p.m. start against Interboro.

Spring Grove 17, Garden Spot 10

At Spring Grove, the Rockets pulled off quite the comeback in this nonleaguer on Friday, scoring 17 unanswered points in the second half to collect the victory and improve to 2-0.

After a scoreless first quarter, the second was all Spartans (1-1). With about five minutes to go before the break, Seth Musselman scored on an 83-yard run to make it 7-0. And after Zachary Martin hit a 25-yard field goal 34 seconds before the break, Musselman picked off a Davon Melbourne pass in the end zone.

However, that major momentum didn’t last in the second half.

Kade Gibbs found the end zone for the Rockets on a 15-yard run in the third quarter. Shortly thereafter, the Spartans lost a fumble on a punt and Spring Grove took over on the Spot 27. From there, Gibbs broke off a 21-yard run, and Brody Reddig put the Rockets in front on a 1-yard ramble.

Ryan Brooks’ 21-yard field goal in the fourth provided the final margin.

The Rockets iced it with back-to-back sacks.

Garden Spot will be back at it in Week 3, hosting Ephrata in a 7 p.m. start next Friday.

Boyertown 28, Governor Mifflin 21

At Shillington, the Mustangs dropped to 0-2. No details were immediately available.

The defeat came on the heels of Thursday’s move by the Governor Mifflin School District to increase security and set new procedures for entry to events at the football stadium.

The changes, reported by the Reading Eagle, came in the wake of two incidents on the district’s campus — one last week during a football loss to Wilson, and another this week.

On Tuesday, the Eagle reported, two Reading juveniles were arrested after they were spotted on the far corner of the intermediate school parking lot during morning drop-off and found in possession of knives and an airsoft gun, authorities said.

The game against Wilson had been called off near the end of the third quarter and the stadium evacuated after a report, later determined to be false, of a student who had a gun.

In Week 3, the Mustangs will travel to Landisville to take on Hempfield.
