National average price of gas set to break Labor Day record

Prices at the gas pump are at an all-time high this holiday weekend.
“It’s really, really bad,” said Cecil Township resident David Budavich as he pumped gas.
On Sunday, AAA said the national average price of gas was $4.15 per gallon. The average price in Pittsburgh was even higher at $4.35, according to AAA.
“The national average has never been above $4 per gallon on Labor Day,” AAA Media Relations Manager Aixa Diaz said in a news release.
Budavich said the high fuel costs are making him think about how often he is getting behind the wheel.
“We try to consolidate our shopping trips. Right? If we’re going to go pick something up, we’re going to try to make it a one-trip deal. So, a lot less frequent trips and stuff,” Budavich said.
AAA said the gas prices are a result of the high crude oil prices, which are “in the $90 per barrel range.”
“Well actually my gas is over $5,” said Ralph Harlan Jr., who used 93 Super unleaded to fill his vehicle. “About 14 gallons, $70 just for my car, let alone somebody, if they have a bigger vehicle.”
Excluding this year, gas prices this time of year are typically cheaper because of the lower demand.
The previous Labor Day record was $3.82 per gallon in 2012, according to AAA.
