The Leesport Area Historical Society will present Leesport Area Community Days Friday from 5 to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 9 at the Leesport Playground. A classic car cruise will take place Friday from 5 to 8.
There will be food and games from local nonprofit organizations and businesses. A Johnny Cash/June Carter tribute band performs Saturday at 7. The Schuylkill Valley High School Band starts the day’s entertainment at 2, followed by Die Tired and Agent 99. DJ Eddie Edd will be performing all day.
A fireworks display at 9 p.m. honors the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the 125th anniversary of Leesport, and the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Plant sale
The Penn State Master Gardeners of Berks County fall plant sale will be held Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the North Campus Activity Center, 1208 County Welfare Road, Bern Township (behind the Berks County Agricultural Center). Perennials, shrubs, native plants, and houseplants will be available. Master Gardeners on hand to help with plant selections and offer information on soil preparation, planting techniques, lawn care and composting. Free literature will be available on garden topics.

Local government show
The League of Women Voters of Berks County is featuring a program on local government airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m. in September on Berks Community Television. It is available for streaming at bctv.org.
Guests are Karen A. Miller, Nan Dunford and Jess Royer.
Miller is a former Reading mayor and council member who served as state secretary of community affairs, chair of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, regional administrator for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and executive director of the Pennsylvania Economy League.
Dunford has led nonprofit agencies, served on Reading City Council and pursued a 25-year career in municipal management.
Royer is chairman of the Spring Township Board of Supervisors, after having previously chaired the zoning hearing board for the township. He has also been a city planner and public librarian in Reading.
Austen Kennedy and Karen Parish will host the program.
Spiritual exploration
The Spiritual Exploration Project presents “The Zinnias in Your Life,” a program on storytelling and sharing with Pat Babel and Nancy Omaha Boy Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 257 W. Walnut St., Kutztown. Share stories of the things that brighten your life when all else fails.
Omaha Boy presents a program on “Our Sumerian Heritage” Sept. 15 at 9:30 a.m. in West Lawn United Methodist Church, 15 Woodside Ave. Learn about a surprisingly modern culture from 5,000 years ago.
Block party
Reading’s 6th Ward is holding a block party Saturday from noon to 4 at Lauer’s Park Elementary School, 251 N. Second St. Activities include music, dancing, food, games, a raffle and face painting. There will be food vendors and more than 30 information booths. The dedication of the site’s Story Walk installation is set for noon.
World affairs
The World Affairs Council of Greater Reading is holding a pair of programs this month to discuss contemporary global issues.
A luncheon talk on “Islam: The Basics and Role in Today’s World” will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Alvernia University’s McGlinn Conference Center in Reading. It will be led by Dr. Natana J. DeLong-Bas from Boston College. Cost including a meal is $30 for council members, $35 for nonmembers and $15 for students. Admission is $10 for those not purchasing a meal. On Sept. 16 at 4 p.m., the McGlinn Center will host “The Rising Tide of Antisemitism” with Abbey Krain, Philadelphia deputy regional director for the Anti-Defamation League. Admission is free of charge.
Fleetwood history
The Fleetwood Area Historical Society will meet Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Fleetwood Community Center, 110 W. Arch St. The 1877 Fleetwood School building, the core of today’s Community Center, will reach its 150th anniversary in 2027. The meeting will include a look at the evolution of the old Fleetwood High School as well as the district’s one-room schools. Admission is free, and all are welcome.
Kids and screens
A free lecture on kids and movement will be held Sept. 19 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Muhlenberg Community Library, 3612 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. Author and educator Kate Hughes will discuss screens and the developing brain. Learn more at Muhlenbergcommunitylibrary.org.
Dreibelbis farm events
Historic Dreibelbis Farm near Virginville will be the scene of a Maiden Creek Trail maintenance project Sept. 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of the United Way Day of Caring. On Sept. 20, an old-fashioned barn dance will be held under the direction of hoedown caller Lester Miller. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. From 2 to 4 there will be house tours offered by the farm’s volunteer docents.

Field of Dreams
The Conrad Weiser Field of Dreams Baseball Game is set for Sept. 19 at the Robesonia baseball field, 102 W. Ruth Ave. There will be hot dogs and baked goods available for purchase. A basket raffle is planned as well. Proceeds go to Veterans Making A Difference and Liberty Square.
Hopewell program
Peter Glogosky explores the 18th- and 19th-century limestone and lime industry of southeastern Pennsylvania in a program Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site Visitor Center. The program is presented by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace.
History hike
The Daniel Boone Homestead in Exeter Township is holding a history hike Sept. 26 at 9 a.m. as part of the Berks Trail Challenge. The route takes about an hour to complete. Fighter’s Heaven
Fighter’s Heaven, the former Muhammad Ali training camp near Deer Lake, Schuylkill County, is holding a “Special 10th Anniversary Celebration: Fighter’s Heaven in Art and Literature” on Oct. 10.
Broadcaster Jim Lampley will be a special guest at the event, which introduces artist Mark Dickens’ “Fighter’s Heaven in Art” project and the release of author Todd Mealy’s book “Fighter’s Heaven: Inside the Camp Where Muhammad Ali Remade His Legacy.”
